“As we celebrate Black History Month, reflect on a historical figure, movement, or milestone that has shaped you as a person. How does that legacy live on and what does it mean for your future?
Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the individuals, movements, and milestones that have shaped our communities, nation, and future. The contributions and sacrifices of Black leaders throughout history continue to inspire progress, resilience, and positive change. By exploring their enduring legacies, students can gain a deeper understanding of the past, recognize their impact on the present, and consider how they can help shape a stronger, more inclusive future. Reflecting on these stories encourages leadership, civic engagement, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in their communities.

Prize
- First Place Winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship to the Florida college or technical career institution of your choice and a resolution from the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (FBC-LEO).
- Second Place Winner will receive a $500 scholarship to the Florida college or technical career institution of your choice and a resolution from the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (FBC-LEO).
- Third Place Winner will receive a $250 scholarship to the Florida college or technical career institution of your choice and a resolution from the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (FBC-LEO).
Entry Requirements and Instructions:
You must be an eleventh- or twelfth-grader in an FBC-LEO member municipality during the 2026-2027 school year.

The essay must be typed or legibly printed(no cursive and no pictures).

The use of AI and ChatGPT software or similar programs is strictly prohibited.

The essay must not exceed 750 words.

A completed entry form must be returned with your essay.
